CORIS VS. BALLERINE

Why companies choose Coris

Ballerine started in 2022 as an open-source toolkit for building custom KYC/KYB flows, and that open-source core is still available today. Its commercial product has since shifted toward AI-native merchant risk and compliance for acquirers, banks, fintechs, and marketplaces. Coris covers the same merchant-risk lifecycle - onboarding, underwriting, and ongoing monitoring - as a single, fully-managed platform, purpose-built for merchant risk from day one, with no engineering investment required to build, host, or maintain the underlying infrastructure.

Where Coris goes further

01

A fully-managed platform, not infrastructure to run yourself

Coris is delivered as a ready-to-run, fully-managed platform: no source code to host, patch, or secure, and no engineering investment required to get live. Ballerine's core engine is open source (Apache 2.0) and was built to be self-hostable, but as of this writing the open-source repository is undergoing a major rebuild and is not actively supported, according to Ballerine's own GitHub page. Today, running Ballerine in practice means using its commercial hosted product.

02

Built for merchant risk from day one, not repositioned into it

Coris has run a single, consistent roadmap focused entirely on merchant and payments risk since it was founded. Ballerine's current commercial product looks materially different from what it launched with in 2022 to 2023: it started as an open-source KYC/KYB toolkit and has since repositioned as an AI-native merchant risk platform, most recently adding a “Scam & Fraud Detection API” in April 2026. Buyers evaluating Ballerine today are evaluating a product that has changed shape more than once in a short period.

03

Monitoring that runs across the full merchant lifecycle

Coris continuously monitors merchant portfolios for web presence, adverse media, and transaction-laundering risk as a core part of the platform, across whichever processor or bank a company already uses. Ballerine's Mastercard-certified Merchant Monitoring Service Provider (MMSP) status covers a narrower, card-scheme-specific compliance requirement; Coris has applied for the same certification and is awaiting approval.

04

A track record of results, not just a roadmap

Coris's results are documented in named, detailed customer case studies, specific companies, specific before-and-after metrics, and named executives on the record, including cutting manual reviews by up to 89% and reducing merchant review time by two-thirds. Ballerine publishes platform-wide outcome claims of its own (up to 90% fewer false positives, 2 to 3x faster onboarding, and 50 to 70% less manual work), but without the same customer-attributed detail visible in its public materials.

What our customers say

Quote

Risk cannot be an afterthought. It’s costly, and it escalates fast. With Coris, we got structure, coverage, and speed, all without building our own tools or hiring a full-time risk team.
