Introducing Adverse Media Insights

March 28, 2024

Today, we’re excited to introduce Adverse Media Insights to the Coris platform. As the latest addition to the MerchantProfiler product, this feature allows risk teams to automatically screen businesses and their owners for negative information indicative of key risks.

Automating this manual check saves risk teams critical time in the SMB onboarding & underwriting process. Read on to learn more, or check it out yourself.

KYB analysis is still manual

Many companies go beyond basic Know your Business (KYB) requirements and assess a business for reputational, credit, and regulatory risks to determine whether they want to do business with that SMB. Oftentimes, they will review news outlets for key risk indicators. For example, have there been any recent news articles discussing relevant cases against the business or its beneficial owners?

Up until now, this analysis has been manual. Risk teams will individually search each business and its beneficial owners for any negative media results online. If a risk team is reviewing thousands of businesses per week, these manual searches can quickly add up.

When our customers shared how much time they spent on manual media searches, we started investigating opportunities to automate this process.

Leveraging automated insights

Adverse Media Insights automatically searches across media outlets to find negative information regarding a business or its beneficial owners. This information can include accusations of business fraud (credit card fraud, forgery, etc.), convictions, or open cases against the business or its management.

How does it work?

  • 1. If a customer has set up an integration with Stripe or Adyen, the adverse media search will occur automatically for every incoming SMB application.
  • 2. Any adverse media search results will surface to the customer.
  • 3. If the customer uses Fuzio, they can set up a rule to refer any SMB applications with adverse media insight hits for manual review.

If a customer is only using the MerchantProfiler product but hasn’t set up a Stripe or Adyen integration, #1 and #2 are slightly different. Adverse media insights can be consumed via the Coris API, or they’ll show up in the business dashboard if a customer is using the Coris portal.
